R(+) Lipoic acid
is the natural form of this vital antioxidant. It is the sole form produced in the body for use in the mitochondria. Conventional "lipoic acid" or "alpha lipoic acid" supplements are only 50% R(+)-lipoic acid; the other half of such supplements is the artificial S(-)-enantiomer. Research demonstrates that R(+)-lipoic acid is more potent than the S(-)-form, and that in some cases the S(-)-form interferes with R(+)-lipoic acid's actions in the body.



Unless they specify otherwise, "lipoic acid" supplements are a 50/50 mixture of the natural R (+) lipoic acid, and the synthetic S (-) lipoic acid. These mixtures are called "racemates." In some cases, S (-) lipoic acid - or the racemate - is simply less effective than R (+) lipoic acid. But in other cases, the S (-) form actually acts in opposition to the activity of R (+) lipoic acid.

Glucose MetabolismInsulin resistance, in which the cells of the body stop responding properly to the hormone insulin, happens to some degree in almost all of us as we age. Insulin resistance causes higher levels of insulin, blood sugar, and free fatty acids, all of which are threats to your health.

• Lipoic acid has been used to support healthy blood sugar metabolism. Scientists have compared the effects of the two "lipoic acid" molecules seperately.
• R (+) lipoic acid has emerged as the active ingredient in the racemate. R (+) lipoic acid fights all of the major effects of insulin resistance. The S(-)-form does not help in some of these areas, and even makes things worse in others.

Antioxidant DefensesLipoic acid is known as a powerful and versatile antioxidant.
• R (+) lipoic acid is more easily absorbed and taken into the cells than S (-) lipoic acid.
• Both forms of lipoic acid can be made more powerful by "charging" them up into their DHLA form. R (+) -lipoic acid is "upgraded" much more rapidly than S(-)-lipoic acid.
• Many studies have found that R (+) lipoic acid provides much more effective protection than S (-) lipoic acid or the racemate. In some cases, the S (-) lipoic acid actually counteracts the effects of R (+) lipoic acid.

Neurological HealthLipoic acid is known for its ability to protect brain and nerve cells from free radicals and toxins. Excessive levels of "transition metals" such as iron, copper, and cadmium are believed to play an important role in many neurological disorders. Having too much free iron in a key part of the brain has been implicated as a cause of Parkinson's disease, for example.
• R (+) lipoic acid supplements partially reverse the age-associated loss of spatial and temporal memory seen in old animals.
• An animal study using R (+) lipoic acid found that it was able to significantly reduce age-related buildup of iron in the brain. Other studies suggest that S (-) lipoic acid will not work as well.

Mitochondrial FunctionThe biggest source of free radicals in your body are your cellular "power plants," the mitochondria. They are both the origin, and the target, of most of the free radical damage in the body. As we age, our mitochondria become less and less efficient, generating less and less energy while creating more and more free radicals.
• R (+) lipoic acid, in animal experiments and in test-tube studies, makes mitochondria more efficient, so that they produce more energy and create fewer free radicals. Age-associated damage to mitochondrial structure is significantly reduced. S (-) lipoic acid does not have these effects, and may antagonize the action of R (+) lipoic acid.
• These benefits have a real impact on the organism. Animals undergoing a simulated heart attack recover heart function more rapidly when infused with R (+) lipoic acid; S (-) lipoic acid has no such effect.
• Animals who receive R (+) lipoic acid supplements look better and are more active.

Fundamental AgingNearly all researchers into the biology of aging agree that the decay of mitochondrial function is a major engine of the aging process. Caloric restriction, with adequate nutrition, is the only proven way to slow down the fundamental aging process in mammals.
• Many of the benefits of R( +) lipoic acid closely mimic those of caloric restriction. R (+) lipoic acid's effects on mitochondrial function are the most striking and unique parallel.

Strontium Support II is an organic, stable strontium form (not to be confused with the radioactive strontium-90 isotope). Strontium is a trace mineral in the diet whose metabolism is closely tied to that of calcium, and which concentrates in the skeletal system, where it supports the function of osteoblasts (the cells which form new bone) while reducing the differentiation and activity of osteoclasts (the cells which resorb old bone). Extensive evidence supports a role for strontium in supporting skeletal health.

 

Strontium: The First Bone-Building Supplement! 
             
Bone loss accelerates suddenly in menopausal women because the drop in estrogen levels causes an increase in the resorption (teardown) of existing bone. But resorption is only half of the story. Age-related bone loss is also caused by a decrease in the formation of new bone tissue.

Existing drugs for treating osteoporosis, as well as calcium and vitamin D supplements, work by reducing bone resorption. But they do not support the formation of new bone. These drugs and nutrients increase the mineralization of bone, but they do not help the body to build new bone tissue. And in fact, within weeks of starting use of antiresorptive drugs like Fosamax,® the body's formation of new bone actually decreases. The resulting bone is less prone to fracture, but is not the same as youthful, healthy bone.

Strontium is a mineral found along with calcium in most foods. Research has long suggested that it may be an essential nutrient required for the normal development, structure, function, and health of the skeletal system. Clinical trials going back into the 1940s have supported this conclusion, but recent studies have provided evidence that it can offer unique nutritional support against loss of bone structure and function.

Animal studies have shown that Strontium supplements both decrease bone resorption, and increase the formation of new bone tissue.

• In animal models, Strontium (in various forms, such as chloride, carbonate, gluconate, and lactate) causes "baby" osteoblasts (bone-building cells) to multiply more quickly.
• Bone tissue cultures which are exposed to Strontium synthesize more bone matrix and new bone collagen. The same amount of calcium has no effect on these parameters.
• In bone tissue culture, Strontium reduces bone resorption at concentrations at which calcium has no effect, prevents the resorption caused by excessive parathyroid hormone, and slows the rate at which immature osteoclasts develop.
• Strontium-supplemented diets boost bone strength in experimental animals without a negative impact on bone quality, even at extremely high doses.

Human clinical trials also support Strontium's ability to both support new bone formation and prevent excessive resorption.
• The results of early clinical trials using Strontium (lactate) led researchers to speculate that Strontium increased osteoblast activity.
• Bone biopsies from a small human pilot trial revealed an astounding 172.4% increase in new bone formation activity after six months of Strontium (gluconate) supplementation.
• The bone-building activity of osteoblasts can be measured using bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, while cross-linked N-telopeptide (NTx) and C-telopeptide (CTx) mark the degradation of bone collagen by ravaging osteoclasts.
