FUNCTIONS

Body cells and tissues are threatened continuously by damage caused by toxic free radicals and reactive oxygen species (e.g., peroxides) which are produced during normal oxygen metabolism, by other chemical reactions, and by toxic agents in the environment. Free radicals are capable of disrupting metabolic activity and cell structure. When this occurs, additional free radicals are produced which, in turn, can result in more extensive damage to cells and tissues. The uncontrolled production of free radicals is thought to be a major contributing factor to many degenerative processes seen during aging.

Glutathione is a naturally-occurring tripeptide of L-cysteine, L-glutamate and L-glycine. Glutathione is the essential co-substrate for two major antioxidant enzymes in the body; glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase.  As such, glutathione offers one mechanism for scavenging toxic free radicals.

INDICATIONS
L-Glutathione may be a useful dietary supplement for individuals wishing to increase their intake of glutathione.

The active ingredients, ginkgo flavone glycosides, can help protect the body’s structure and function against damage from free radicals, as well as helping to maintain healthy circulatory function and mental performance.

FUNCTIONS

Ginkgo biloba is the oldest living species of tree, having survived relatively unchanged for at least 200 million years. Native to China, ginkgo has long been recommended in Chinese herbal medicine for its numerous nutritional benefits for the brain and circulatory system. Ginkgo leaf extract has been the object of numerous scientific and clinical studies since the early 1970s and is now probably the most extensively studied and utilized botanical extract in the world. Interest in Ginkgo biloba centers on its reputed benefits on brain function, especially on the aging brain. With advancing age, the body often suffers from decreased blood vessel elasticity and tone, and decreased blood fluidity. Insufficient blood, oxygen, and nutrient flow to the brain can lead to impairment in cognitive function.

Studies over the past 30 years show that 120 to 240 mg per day of Ginkgo biloba extract increases blood flow to the brain resulting in increased oxygen and glucose utilization with subsequent improvement in mental function. These benefits are attributed to two main classes of phytoactive compounds present in the Ginkgo biloba leaf: ginkgo flavone glycosides and terpene lactones. As powerful antioxidants, the ginkgo flavone glycosides counteract the deleterious actions of free radical accumulation which impairs cellular energy production, nerve transmission, and increases vascular rigidity.

Ginkgo biloba extract is also reported to inhibit the tendency of red blood cells to stick together (“clumping”), thereby enhancing the fluidity of the blood. Taken together, these actions contribute significantly to increasing blood flow to the brain.

Folate is a water-soluble essential B vitamin found in many foods, including leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits and beans. Research has established that supplementation with folate before and during the first two months of pregnancy can support proper neurological development in the fetus.

Additionally, folate plays a key role in the metabolism of homocysteine. Homocysteine is a sulfur containing amino acid that is created in the body from methionine, an essential amino acid derived solely from dietary intake. High plasma levels of homocysteine appear to injure the vasculature, impairing the functional abilities of endothelial and smooth muscle cells.

Metafolin® folate is a patented, natural form of (6S) 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). 5-MTHF is the naturally occurring, predominant form of folate commonly found in cells and is essential for overall health, as it participates as a cofactor in a reaction that involves the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine.

Unlike synthetic folic acid, 5-MTHF can be used directly by the body, without the need for an additional conversion via the enzyme 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). In certain populations, the body’s ability to convert folic acid to 5-MTHF by use of this enzyme may be compromised due to genetic differences.

Metafolin® contains only the S isomer of 5-MTHF and has been shown to be the only form of folate to be ableto cross the blood-brain barrier.

Metafolin® does not appear to mask the anemia associated with a vitamin B12 deficiency and presents no risk of an accumulation of unmetabolized folic acid in the body.

Hawthorn extract has been shown in human as well as animal studies to improve circulation by dilating coronary blood vessels. Dilation of these blood vessels consequently increases blood, and thus oxygen supply to the heart. Components of hawthorn extract have also been demonstrated to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme, thus reducing blood vessel constriction.

Hawthorn extract normalizes heart rate, as well as providing a positive inotropic effect. These properties of hawthorn, together with its vasodilatory and diuretic effects, are the basis for its use in cardiovascular support.
