Hawthorne Max-V provides a significant quantity of the flowering tops and berries of the hawthorn tree, Crataegus oxyacantha, standardized to 2% vitexin-2" rhamnoside. Rich in bioflavonoids, extract of hawthorn has been known for centuries as a potent cardiovascular tonic, improving the function of theheart and circulatory system.

FUNCTIONS

Hawthorn’s berries and flowering tops have been used medicinally for close to two millennia as a treatment for digestive problems, kidney and bladder stones, and as a diuretic. Only recently has hawthorn’s cardioprotective benefits been recognized. Today hawthorn is perceived, especially in Europe, as a prime supplement for healthy cardiovascular support. The cardiotherapeutic properties of hawthorn are due to its high content of many biologically active flavonoid compounds, including anthocyanidins, proanthocyanidins, quercetin, vitexin, vitexin ramnoside, as well as catechin and epicatechin. Hawthorn extract has been shown in human as well as animal studies to improve circulation by dilating coronary blood vessels. Dilation of these blood vessels consequently increases blood, and thus oxygen supply to the heart. Components of hawthorn extract have also been demonstrated to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme, thus reducing blood vessel constriction.

Hawthorn extract normalizes heart rate, as well as providing a positive inotropic effect. These properties of hawthorn, together with its vasodilatory and diuretic effects, are the basis for its use in cardiovascular support.

Ginkgo Biloba Max-V, provided by Douglas Laboratories, contains 60 mg of the herb Ginkgo biloba, in a vegetarian capsule. The active ingredients, ginkgo flavone glycosides, can help protect the body’s structure and function against damage from free radicals, as well as helping to maintain healthy circulatory function and mental performance.

FUNCTIONS

Ginkgo biloba is the oldest living species of tree, having survived relatively unchanged for at least 200 million years. Native to China, ginkgo has long been recommended in Chinese herbal medicine for its numerous nutritional benefits for the brain and circulatory system. Ginkgo leaf extract has been the object of numerous scientific and clinical studies since the early 1970s and is now probably the most extensively studied and utilized botanical extract in the world. Interest in Ginkgo biloba centers on its reputed benefits on brain function, especially on the aging brain. With advancing age, the body often suffers from decreased blood vessel elasticity and tone, and decreased blood fluidity. Insufficient blood, oxygen, and nutrient flow to the brain can lead to impairment in cognitive function.

Studies over the past 30 years show that 120 to 240 mg per day of Ginkgo biloba extract increases blood flow to the brain resulting in increased oxygen and glucose utilization with subsequent improvement in mental function. These benefits are attributed to two main classes of phytoactive compounds present in the Ginkgo biloba leaf: ginkgo flavone glycosides and terpene lactones. As powerful antioxidants, the ginkgo flavone glycosides counteract the deleterious actions of free radical accumulation which impairs cellular energy production, nerve transmission, and increases vascular rigidity.

Ginkgo biloba extract is also reported to inhibit the tendency of red blood cells to stick together (“clumping”), thereby enhancing the fluidity of the blood. Taken together, these actions contribute significantly to increasing blood flow to the brain.

Folate is a water-soluble essential B vitamin found in many foods, including leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits and beans. Research has established that supplementation with folate before and during the first two months of pregnancy can support proper neurological development in the fetus.

Additionally, folate plays a key role in the metabolism of homocysteine. Homocysteine is a sulfur containing amino acid that is created in the body from methionine, an essential amino acid derived solely from dietary intake. High plasma levels of homocysteine appear to injure the vasculature, impairing the functional abilities of endothelial and smooth muscle cells.

Metafolin® folate is a patented, natural form of (6S) 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). 5-MTHF is the naturally occurring, predominant form of folate commonly found in cells and is essential for overall health, as it participates as a cofactor in a reaction that involves the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine.

Unlike synthetic folic acid, 5-MTHF can be used directly by the body, without the need for an additional conversion via the enzyme 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR). In certain populations, the body’s ability to convert folic acid to 5-MTHF by use of this enzyme may be compromised due to genetic differences.

Metafolin® contains only the S isomer of 5-MTHF and has been shown to be the only form of folate to be ableto cross the blood-brain barrier.

Metafolin® does not appear to mask the anemia associated with a vitamin B12 deficiency and presents no risk of an accumulation of unmetabolized folic acid in the body.

FUNCTIONS

Hawthorn’s berries and flowering tops have been used medicinally for close to two millennia as a treatment for digestive problems, kidney and bladder stones, and as a diuretic. Only recently has hawthorn’s cardioprotective benefits been recognized. Today hawthorn is perceived, especially in Europe, as a prime supplement for healthy cardiovascular support. 

The cardiotherapeutic properties of hawthorn are due to its high content of many biologically active flavonoid compounds, including anthocyanidins, proanthocyanidins, quercetin, vitexin, vitexin ramnoside, as well as catechin and epicatechin. Hawthorn extract has been shown in human as well as animal studies to improve circulation by dilating coronary blood vessels. Dilation of these blood vessels consequently increases blood, and thus oxygen supply to the heart. Components of hawthorn extract have also been demonstrated to inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme, thus reducing blood vessel constriction.

Hawthorn extract normalizes heart rate, as well as providing a positive inotropic effect. These properties of hawthorn, together with its vasodilatory and diuretic effects, are the basis for its use in cardiovascular support.

DESCRIPTION Ubiquinol-QH, provided by Douglas Laboratories, is a softgel containing 100 mg of natural ubiquinol in a patented, naturally self-assembling nano-colloid system called VESIsorb® technology for enhanced absorption. 

FUNCTIONS Ubiquinol is the biologically reduced form of ubiquinone, also known as coenzyme Q10. Ubiquinone can be converted by the body into ubiquinol. While supplemental ubiquinone plays a valuable role in health and can be utilized by the body, recent studies indicate that as people age, the body's ability to convert ubiquinone to ubiquinol begins to decline. Since this nutrient plays critical roles in antioxidant, energy and cardiovascular function, ubiquinol may be of special importance for older adults looking to support normal aging and cardiovascular function. In one study, older adults with suboptimal cardiovascular function were found to be able to support and maintain their cardiovascular function with supplementation of ubiquinol. 

Our Ubiquinol-QH is unique among other ubiquinol products as it utilizes the patented VESIsorb® technology to deliver ubiquinol. When mixed with an aqueous system, this patented technology results in the formation of a nano-colloid containing solubilized ubiquinol. This association colloid delivery system contains a highly uniform distribution of droplets that are less than 100 nm in diameter. The size and structure of these droplets allow for enhanced solubility and absorption of ubiquinol. The formation of the colloidal system upon contact with an aqueous environment (such as the lumen of the intestine) enables the solubilized ubiquinol to more easily diffuse across the unstirred water layer that is present between the enterocyte and the lumen of the intestine. One can demonstrate the enhanced solubility of the ubiquinol contained in Ubiquinol-QH by placing a capsule in warm water. Once the capsule opens, the contents can be easily mixed with the water, resulting in the formation of the association colloid. There is no separation of oil and water phases as is typical with more traditional delivery systems.
